While the premise of this blog was to document the challenge of feeding our family of 6 (often 7) on $60 a week, I must say this is only area we are working on in our lives. The overall goal is have a more meaningful peaceful simple life. Here is a few ways we are doing that.
1. Clutter :
In the last 2 weeks we have donated over 17 garage bags to Goodwill. We have tossed 5 garage bags of items that are not worth donating into the trash. And pulled 3 worthless pieces of furniture to the curb. We are far from done. We want to live a SIMPLE life. That includes clutter. Less stuff means less to clean. When you think of that way, maybe we are just lazy? 😉
2. Exercise :
Excess fat is being cut away from my body personally by involving myself in the Couch to 5K program. The whole family is cutting back on servings sizes. And we are purposely including more veggies and less carbs in our diets.
3. Utilities :
We set the AC at 78 and higher when we can. We use to set it at 74. We now set it at 82 when we leave the house. We are trying to figure out a no/low cost laundry line. We have no money for the poles of a traditional line. Right now we use a rolling clothing rack to hang shirts on hangers on. But with 4 kids, we need more line space.
4. Clothing :
We continue this process almost on a weekly basis. As we put away clothing we pare down. We are realizing the key to less laundry is less clothes.
5. Fuel :
I am once again reading up on Hyper Miles in order to get the most fuel economy from my already pretty fuel efficient diesel SUV. I use $10 a week but would like to stretch that if I can. Plus we have a trip coming up where I need to make good use of our hypermiles in order to spend as little as possible.
Our quest to live a more simple life has really driven us to take a look at what is around us. Find out if it functional and whether it is needed in our lives. We are surprised what we need and what are willing to give up to have a life of less stuff & stress. 🙂
